Are you unemployed? Have you been laid-off, downsized or displaced? Have you recently recently graduated but can't find a job?
As corporate downsizing continues and unemployment rates rise over 8% many very talented people are left with little options in corporate America. To make matters worse, when a position does come open, you are faced with unbelievable competition, even for the most mundane, minimum wage job.
You're an expert in your field. You're highly educated. You're better than the competition. You're unemployed! Now what? More and more people are taking advantage of this unfortunate predicament by starting their own business. Some have started their business out of necessity while others are using their newfound free time to try out something they have always dreamed about.
We recently assisted one client who graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Forensic Science and Criminal Justice, top in her class, nominated as the most outstanding forensic science student. She spent what little free time she had between classes volunteering with the local Sheriff's Department, being a student teacher and serving as President of the Forensic Investigations Club.
As a former bank manager, she is both educated and professional. She shouldn't have any trouble finding a job, right? As it turns out, municipalities are also having budget shortfalls. Like many corporations, they too are downsizing.
One year later she was still searching, still unemployed. With student loans piling up and bills to pay, she had to do something. After considering her options, she decided to start her own investigations firm, working on behalf of families of missing persons and working on unsolved, cold cases.
This example highlights several benefits of starting your own business. Not only has it turned out to be profitable but it also keeps her skills current in her industry and has proven to be a valuable networking source. Should she choose to re-enter the work force, which would look better on a resume: a large time gap of unemployment or owner of an investigations firm?
Since the middle of 2008 we have seen a significant increase in the number of people starting a business as a result of being unemployed, talented and unable to find work. While some people started their own business as a temporary solution to being unemployed, many have gone on to appreciate the benefits of being self-employed and abandoned their career search all together.
If you have been downsized, displaced or recently graduated but can't find quality employment, take this opportunity to find something you are passionate about and see if you can turn it into a profitable business.
